The Alentejo region of Portugal is home to the Alqueva Dam which is Europe's largest man-made dam - standing on the viewpoint at the medieval village of Monsaraz is certainly worth a trip to understand the scale of it. Within the dam are carp , Wels catfish, channel catfish, crucian hybrids, black bass, barbel, zander, bleak and probably some hidden surprises. Night fishing for carp is now allowed in certain areas which means 24hr fishing! There are plenty of other dams that can be fished in the area too. My favourite fishing has to be on the Rio Guadiana. I think it's like the Wye Valley but with better fishing, less people, more variety of fish and better weather! On one of my last trips I watched hundreds of bee eaters flying around as well as eagles soaring high above .
